Case study: Leg wound in a cat: tumour

09 September 2018

Abstract

Short history:

Old wound dorsal aspect below hock. Has been treated by several other practices so history has been difficult to gather. Has been in a dressing since May 2018. It is an open wound approx 2cmx1cm at this stage. Unable to find out what the original injury was.

Management to date:

10/9/18 First presented to a vet in May with what was described as an old granulating wound about 4cm wide. The cat came to our practice last week. The wound was being dressed at this time once a week, with Allevyn pad. The leg was swollen with rubbed areas from repeated dressings. The leg was hot and uncomfortable. The wound appeared to be doing very little! So all dressings were removed. Cat was been put on Claveseptin and metacam and managed open. It has been cleaned daily with saline. It now bleeds when being cleaned.

12/9/18 Ph checked, was 8. Wound biopsy taken and swab sent to lab.
Wound debrided (surgically) and washed daily with malasetic solution, then dressed with hydrogel.

Outcome:

1/10/18 We continued to treat the wound until the biopsy results. Unfortunately the biopsy revealed a malignant tumor. The veterinary surgeon along with the pathologist decided that amputation of the affected leg would offer the best prognosis. Surgery was performed and so far the cat is doing really well.
