Case study: Use of laser therapy in a whippet post-RTA limb amputation with scapulectomy

23 September 2024

Abstract

This case study details the treatment of Albert, a 6-year-old male neutered whippet, following a road traffic accident resulting in the amputation of his right forelimb, including scapulectomy. After initial stabilisation and transport to a surgical clinic, amputation was chosen over limb salvage due to the severity of the injury. Post-surgery, the patient received laser therapy to support wound healing, reduce oedema and improve recovery outcomes. The case highlights the benefits of laser therapy in wound management, including its role in reducing recovery time and complications. Albert recovered well and returned to normal activity levels, demonstrating the effectiveness of a multimodal approach to pain management and healing.

Right forelimb (medial metacarpus, radius, digit 1) with subsequent surgical intervention for full limb amputation and scapulectomy.

Albert was triaged post-RTA with no significant systemic trauma beyond the injured forelimb. Initial treatment included a Robert Jones bandage and analgesic support. Following conscious radiographs, the decision was made to amputate due to the severity of the radius and digit fractures. After the amputation, which included scapulectomy, the patient recovered from a brief episode of cardiac arrest with successful resuscitation. Albert remained stable post-surgery, receiving pain management and antibiotics to prevent infection.

Albert's wound was initially stabilised with a Robert Jones bandage and hydrogel dressing, followed by air transport to a surgical clinic for amputation. Post-surgery, a multimodal approach to pain management included buprenorphine, meloxicam, gabapentin, and prophylactic antibiotics. A comprehensive care plan was established for laser therapy to aid in wound healing and reduce edema. Regular follow-up appointments and controlled exercise were incorporated to ensure proper recovery.
