The causes of injury during the time a bandage is on and once it has been removed can be divided into primary and secondary. Primary injury refers to the time that the bandage is still in place, when there can be interruptions to the blood flow in the tissues. Secondary injury occurs 24–48 hours after the removal of the bandage, when blood flows back into the tissue following a period of ischaemia (Calder, 2014).
